NEW ADDITION TO MANTENO'S HISTORICAL SOCIETY NOW COMPLETE Fundraising got its earliest prompting from a grant applied for by Illinois Representative Lisa Dugan and Mayor Tim Nugent. The foundation was poured in June of 2008. By January 2010 there remained work on plumbing and interior wood finishing. In May 2010 the new addition was completed. Generous donations arrived from Manteno citizens and public service groups (e.g. The American Legion Post 755) and a wide representation of local businesses. (Local Business would often donate employee personal time and much appreciated discounts.) Manteno's "Octoberfest" provided the opportunity on Saturday, the 25th September 2010, for the ribbon-cutting welcome to the Museum's now completed expansion. Guests were guided on their inspection by Museum officers and members. Mrs. Michelle LaBarre and Ms. Becky Young wore period dress of Civil War. President Jackie Hammond, Mayor Tim Nugent, Jeff Jarvis, Mary Ella Farrell, Margaret Klipp, Tina Dumontelle, Gary Seiner, Cindy Simmons, Suzanne Pruchnicki and Paul Pruchnicki each greeted and visited with their guests. Earlier that Spring, in lieu of a Kankakee Cultivator's Club grant-type gift, President Jackie Hammond, and Michelle LaBarre, were assisted by Manteno Highschool students, of Ag Teacher Mike Walsh, to landscape the new addition's entrance with colorful and handsome flower and shrub plantings. Noteworthy features by which Manteno's Museum has been elevated to visibly professional status prove with the sure hand of Ms. Becky Young, She is now the assistant curator of the world-class Glessner House in Chicago. Henry Hobson Richardson was the unquestioned mentor of "The Chicago School" of architecture. The Glessner House is the on still-standing house designed by Richardson (in the very year of his death: 1886). 850 square feet of exhibit-space were added to the original structure. The donated hours of officers and members add to well over a thousand. Mr. Jeff Jarvis remained throughout the driving moral force and the most practical solver of every problem. Mr. Darrel LaMore brought all but magical command of electric wiring. Guest researchers will be relieved to learn that a model comfort station is now available on the first floor. Some find it close to miraculous that the costs for this impressive addition were met in full by the Summer 2010.
